Diamonds are a tough stone; their hardness coveted for jewelry that lasts. But my favorite diamonds aren’t for wearing, and they’re definitely not tough.

Lake Superior washes up her jewels at a certain time of year. It only happens when the air is sharp and ice begins to rear its edges. The frozen water forms the most intricate patterns, cracks, and cliffs – diamonds of the lake.

Winter begins to show its face when November fades to December. The limited sun reflects in the mirrored ground. In the cutting air, solstice season's light creates a glistening show for all those willing to watch.

Lake diamonds can’t last forever. Soon, they’ll melt. So while you can, go out and find some. Watch them shine in the light. Hopefully next winter, Lake Superior will offer her treasures once more.
